Listening to your story
When I meet with a new directee in spiritual direction for the first time, I ask them to share their story with me—a collection of the elements that have been most formative for them. For many, it’s their first experience of truly reflecting back on their lives. Perhaps doing so has felt too risky, the fear of what will be revealed when the stones are turned over. Perhaps the pacing of life has not allowed for time to sit, to be still, to look back and look within. Other directees come having explored their stories on several occasions, familiar with its movements and edges.
In either case and in every telling, there are moments where the directee gets quiet, where emotion stir, where tears fall. Whether the detail has been shared numerous times or now for the first time, a layer of meaning has been discovered. An insight has been stumbled upon. A knowing has been made visible.
Our healing is seldom linear, one step to the next. Most often it looks much more like a spiral, a continual returning to our inner world, new and deeper insights revealed at each layer—like sacred texts revisited, their truth and meaning ever unfolding.
On February 16-18, I’d love for you to join me for Listening to Your Story, a virtual retreat. We’ll read the sacred texts of our lives and engage practices that help uncover insights waiting to emerge—whether it’s the first time we’ve peered onto the pages or a text we’ve returned to over and over.
